A Homeopathic Way to Treat Arthritis

Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis are the two most common types of Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is thought to result from the wear and tear of joints with increasing age, while Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease, in which one’s immune system attacks the body. In homeopathy, contrary to allopathy, the patient with similar pathological changes may need to be treated with different homeopathic medicines.

There is no single answer to the question, “What is the homeopathic medicine for Arthritis?” Still, one can always suggest a group of medicines for the treatment of Arthritis. A homeopath treats the patient as a whole. Therefore, the mental and physical symptoms are very important in finding the right medicine for the patient.

Sometimes the symptoms, which may be considered totally harmless and insignificant, can play a very important role in finding the proper remedy. In finding a solution to the Arthritis problem, knowledge of the miasm affecting the patient becomes very important to his/her cure.

According to homeopathy, there are four types of miasms affecting mankind. These are Psora, Syphilis, Sycosis and Tubercular. We are all affected by one or more of these miasms. Mental symptoms and personality of a person help in discovering the individual’s miasm(s). Here are some mental symptoms which could be present in the subject affected by these specific miasms.

* PSORIC: Active mind; tired from mental exhaustion; many fears of illness, death; when sick, feelings of hopelessness and incurability arise; mental restlessness; cannot stop talking about their problems when depressed (this is good from a homeopath’s point of view because the more you know about a patient’s symptoms the better you are prescribe his medicine); trembling and shaking over small upsets, especially if fearful; faultfinding; never satisfied and never calm.

* SYPHILITIC: They have fixed ideas that nothing will change (usually, these patients are forced by somebody to visit a doctor); slow mental reactions; fears the night because symptoms are worse at night.

* PSYCOTIC: Suspicious of themselves and their friends; make secrets of everything (even health signs and symptoms, these patients need to visit a homeopath many times so that he can know who they really are); poor memories but can recall the events of the past.

* TUBERCULAR: Depressed; cannot concentrate; contradictory traits, can be screaming and fighting one minute and then sulky and more depressed the next.

Once a homeopath determines the miasmatic remedy of a person, it is given as an inter-current remedy along with another remedy, which falls broadly in the group of remedies suitable for arthritis. To find out proper remedy from this group, one again relies on the physical and mental symptoms of the patient.

As you can see, the selection of remedies in homeopathy very much depend on the way a patient describes his/her condition and the perception of the homeopath. This makes the remedy selection more of an art. If the patient and the attending homeopath are lucky, the remedies might be found with the first attempt, otherwise one has to give it a few trials. As long as a right remedy or remedies are not found, there would not be any effect whatsoever (homeopathic remedies are not supposed to cause any kind of side effects). Given below are brief descriptions of the mental and physical symptoms of some of these remedies. This will help you understand the way a homeopath tackles arthritis.

NOTE: These remedies are only for your information. Please do not try to choose your remedy based on the given symptoms. The complete description of the remedies is not given and it requires a considerable amount of experience on the part of a homeopath to find the right kind of medicine and potency.

Two most common medicines are Bryonia Alb and Rhus Tox.

* Bryonia Alb can be used when pains are aggravated by slightest motion and relieved by moderate pressure and warmth. Joints are swollen and hot. Patient feels chilly. There is unquenchable thirst for water with dryness of mouth. Patient wants to lie down in bed all the time because every movement gives him pain.

* Rhus Tox is used in recurring attacks when the patient feels chilled when it is hot; is pained by damp weather; there is restlessness and pain on first motion, and feels better by continued motion but again worse after moving for sometime when it becomes necessary for him to repose.

Another common medicine is Colchicum.

Another remedy, which is made from “gold,” is Aurum Metallicum.

* Gold has a specific affinity for joints and bones. Homeopaths use smaller and safer doses of this medicine for Arthritis. There are deep bone pains, which are worse at night and from cold. Because of unbearable pain, there is depression.

Causticum can be tried for a Rheumatoid Arthritis that fares better in damp and warm weather but worse in cold and dry weather.
