What is the Ideal Fat Burning Treadmill Workout?

Sport |

Dear Expert:

I have been walking on the treadmill for 40 minutes four to five times per week. In order to burn fat, is it better to walk at a faster pace with a lower incline or increase the incline and decrease the pace? Also, is 40 minutes enough time or should I increase my time, too?

Answer:

Forty minutes of treadmill walking is sufficient. You don’t need to increase your time, nor do you need to worry about some sort of fat-burning formula. You simply want to make sure you get a good workout.

I recommend that you perform sessions that combine varied speeds and inclines — with the goal being to elevate your heart rate to within your target heart rate zone. In your case, it’s probably between 120 and 150 beats per minute. By exercising within your target range you will be burning calories, which is key to losing body fat.
