Women Have Less Time for Exercise

Women's Health |

If your facility is in a lower-income area, then you can support your community’s health by encouraging women to exercise. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health (December 2001) found that women with an annual of income less than $20,000 had less time to exercise compared to men with the same income.

The study was conducted from 1999 to 2000, and included a sample of 1,800 adults in the U.S. About 40 percent of the participants had annual incomes of less than $20,000. The reasons for less activity among lower-income women is, in part, due to a lack of safe places for them to exercise. Participants who lived in neighborhoods with sidewalks and enjoyable scenery reported higher activity levels.
